Island of Maui/Hawaii: descending from the rim of Haleakala Crater at 3000m/10'000ft elevation down to the bottom of the crater you enjoy the bright colors of the volanic walls and debris from the last eruption (1790). The walk across the crater needs 6-9 hrs and descends around 600m/2000ft before zigzaging again to the parking lot atop the rim.
